The more love that someone shows to another person consumed with pride, the less love that they might receive from them. However, God teaches His children by example; to show the same love to the proud as they do to anyone else. It's just a matter of learning what the intricacies are of God's love.
God's love does not waver accordingly to how much someone loves Him at any given moment in time. God tells His children that neither should theirs. It's easy to show love to someone who shows love in return. But, God is love, and God commands His children to love each other in the same way in which He loves.
God does not want any of His children to be mistreated or abused. Setting boundaries is included in the definition of love. To love, as God loves, is detailed throughout the Bible.
